2023.02.13 Costco Roses

Disclaimer: I know it doesn't seem like it, but I am trying to make shorter and more concise videos. I always feel like it's difficult to ensure I have all the context.

Also, the way tiktok allows captions and has a character limit, I want to be sure my media is accessible for everyone. Low vision/blind people can use screen readers and get all the context and hoh/deaf people can read the captions and or transcript and it makes sense vs being chopped up/mixed up/not in sequential order with the video because I write/talk too much.

If anyone has suggestions for what would make videos more accessible/enjoyable or want to share what they use to make video/image media accessible: I like having options.

In the video the sleeve of my black hoodie makes regular appearances. The kitchen counter is a laminate that looks like wood. I have a white and grey/gray marble backdrop and cutting board. The vase is already prepped with flower food water and is a tall, fancy beer glass. I am prepping red roses.

How we went from this

To this

So cute, right?

Footage from me at costco earlier today: "trojan (condoms) variety pack 13.49. (Pans camera to the left) And right over here are - (voice deadpans) Valentine's Day stuff."

So these are costco roses.

So mom wanted flowers.

I don't believe in buying into like, big marketing holidays, but sometimes you want flowers. So there you go.

So what I am doing right now is I'm taking off all the leaves.

Um, I messed up here (took leaves off a decorative leaf stem).

(I drew a neon pink arrow pointing to where I messed up.)

These are decorative leaves.

Um, so the reason why I take leaves off of flowers is because when you put them in the water, they're all fighting for that water.

So, the leaves are going to be drinking that water, and your flowers - the blooms are also going to be fighting for that water.

So, the less things you have fighting for the water in my opinion - the better.

So I'm poppin' off the leaves.

The non-decorative leaves.

And I'm also trying to take off the thorns. So that's why we have some scissors here to take off the thorns that I can't take off with my fingers.

Be careful when de-thorning roses by the way.

Oooh see this one (thorn) I got off with my finger.

I'm so proud. Look, I'm showing you.

Then I tried with this one, but - oh that one worked.

This is the one that didn't work. Scissors.

Also, just fyi I thought it was funny that condoms and flowers were close to each other.

I'm pretty sure it WASN'T a coincidence. Just saying.

But we (those of us of legal age - and it should always be consensual) should all be having, like, safe sex, right?

So I guess in that sense it's ok.

Speaking of balls, I thought this was really funny - anatomy amiright?

(There are leaves and where they attach to the stem they look like balls/scrotum, and I thought it was funny enough to focus on it for a few seconds and share with you.)

So, anyway.

And I popped those balls off.

Along with the rest of the leaves.

Ok, so what I am doing now is I'm going to start cutting the stems at an angle. Kind of like, I guess a 45° angle.

So I'm matching the second* stem with the first stem.

I don't want the flowers or decorative leaves to be too tall against each other.

I want them all to be around the same height.

Lots of snipping stems with scissors sounds.

Also, with the decorative leaves I just put in the vase, (I circled them in a neon pink circle) I probably should take off more leaves because we don't want the leaves dipping into the water.

It's just not good.

Don't do it. Or do it, I'm not your mom.

I tried showing you the angle I cut, but the focusing didn't want to work.

So, just trust me it's about a 45° angle.

Ok with THIS decorative stem of leaves, I actually took more leaves off because they were definitely going to dip under the water and that is not good.

Here are the leaves we popped off.

And about to show you our final product with the decorative leaves. Be sure to follow me on twitch. Ok thanks bye!

I have a lot of interests

but to make sure I don’t get off track

this page will be about the zero waste journey

PPS I still buy things
I just try to refuse more, reduce, and buy less often.

When I make a purchase I reframe it, let the items hang out in the ‘cart’ for a while, and think about its possible after life (can it bio degrade, can we re/up cycle or sell it?)

I was definitely a huge consumer.
I am trying to change.

One day at a time.

Hang out for some fun stories, ey!
